This area is home to
a whole host of markets, restaurants, art galleries, museums and
antique shops as well as a Casino. The town is home to the annual
Dusi Cano Marathon and the start or end point of the annual Comrades
Marathon between Durban and PMB. All this is found in a setting
of rolling hills, waterfalls and a special style of country living
The area has been visited by Gandhi, Mandela
and Twain, making this region of South Africa famous in the history
annuls.
The Midlands Meander, the first route of its
kind in the country, opened up the wonders and beauty of the interior
of KwaZulu-Natal well over a decade ago. It now boasts an eclectic
and fascinating mix of arts and crafts, world-class restaurants
and homely comforts, with a wide range of sporting environmental
and historical pursuits.
For a day out in the country, the magnificent
Howick Falls located in Midlands provides picnic facilities, interesting
walks, and abseiling. Trout and bass fishing are plentiful in
the area and for the more adventurous there is paragliding off
Bulwer Mountain or taking a slide across the canopy of Karkloof's
indigenous forests.
