The area around The Five Star Nambiti Hills
Private Game Lodge is steeped in the most remarkable history!
It is the centre of the historic Anglo-Boer War, during which
there was bloody conflict between the Boer and Brit.
During the Historic Battlefields Adventure Weekend which is to
be held at Nambiti Hills Private Game Lodge, Ken Gillings - retired
businessman, soldier, renowned historian and acclaimed battlefield
guide, will conduct a guided tour of the battlefields bringing
in the concept of how battlefield blunders can benefit business.
Ken has been conducting battlefields tours for over 40 years and
has written extensively on South African military history.
October 1899 marked the beginning of the Anglo-Boer War and Ladysmith
was to be a key point in the struggle for Natal. No fewer than
five battles were fought in Gen Sir Redvers Buller's attempts
to relieve the town
- The Battle of Colenso
15 Dec 1899
- The Battle of iNthabamnyama 20-22 Jan 1900
- The Battle of Spioenkop 23-24 Jan 1900
- The Battle of Vaalkrantz 5-7 Feb 1900
- The Battle of Tugela Heights 12-28 Feb 1900
Several battles were fought prior to and during
the 118 day Siege of Ladysmith. One of the most famous was fought
adjacent to The Nambiti Hills Private Game Lodge, at Elandslaagte
on the 21st October 1899, when a classic conventional manoeuvre
executed by Col Ian Hamilton resulted in a staggering defeat for
the Boers and the death of their impetuous commander, Gen Jan
Kock.
